Australian writer arrested in China for espionage fears he will die in prison

A Chinese-Australian writer who has been arrested and jailed in China for more than four years said he feared he might die in prison after a large cyst was found on his kidney.

Yang Hengjun, an Australian citizen and democracy activist, was arrested in 2019 during a visit to see family in China and charged with espionage, charges he has denied.

A court in Beijing held the hearing in secret in 2021, but the decision has been repeatedly delayed.

In a message to supporters last Thursday, Yang, 58, said he had been experiencing discomfort and pain in his kidney for several months.

After a recent medical examination, a doctor advised Yang that he had a 10-centimeter cyst.

"If something happens to my health and I die here, people outside will not know the truth," Yang said in the message. "If something happens to me, who can speak for me?"

Feng Chongyi, Yang's friend and former PhD supervisor at the University of Technology, Sydney, called on the Australian government to work with the international community to pressure the Chinese government to release Yang on bail.

"Yang Hengjun has been subjected to arbitrary detention in China by the Chinese secret police for more than four years, and his life is in danger," he said.

China accuses Australian writer Yang Hengjun of espionage.

On Monday, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told reporters he will raise concerns about Yang's health when he meets Chinese leader Xi Jinping at the Group of 20 summit in New Delhi next month./ CNA
