Shocking/ Doctors find live worm in a woman's brain

For the first time in the world, scientists say that an 8 cm worm has been found alive in the brain of an Australian woman, the BBC reports .

The woman, 64 years old, had been suffering for months with symptoms such as stomach pain, cough and night sweats, which evolved into forgetfulness and depression.

She was admitted to hospital in late January 2021 and a scan later revealed "an atypical lesion within the right frontal lobe of the brain".

But the cause of her condition was only discovered by Dr Bandit during a biopsy in June 2022.

The red parasite could have been alive in her brain for two months, doctors said.

The woman, who lived near a lake area in the south-eastern state of New South Wales, is recovering well.

The roundworm Ophidascaris robertsi is common in pythons, non-venomous snakes found throughout much of Australia./ CNA
