Ukraine offers sperm freezing to soldiers

Ukraine is facing a major demographic crisis, exacerbated by the full-scale Russian occupation. A state program now offers free sperm freezing to soldiers so that their families can have children in case the soldiers die or lose their fertility due to the stress and dangers of war.

Soldiers like Maxim tell the BBC that this is a way to ensure “the future of the Ukrainian nation” and to protect the possibility of starting a family. Initially, the law stipulated that the samples would be destroyed after the soldier’s death, but after a public backlash, the samples are now stored for up to 3 years and can be used by the partner with prior written consent.
