Knife attack in Sydney/ One person dies, two others seriously injured

One person has died and two others have been seriously injured in a stabbing attack in Sydney this morning. The attack reportedly took place in a busy and densely populated area.

Emergency services arrived at the scene and treated three people with serious injuries, but one of them did not survive his serious injuries.

The other two injured, a 22-year-old man and a 47-year-old woman, were taken to hospital in a critical condition. The attacker was arrested a few hours after the incident.

"The suspect in the crime is known to police for minor criminal offenses and a history of mental health problems ," said Senior Police Officer Simon Glaser, adding that he was scheduled to appear in court later in the day.

The motives for this attack are still unknown.

"It's still very early in the investigation and police don't know what the motive was, but it appears to have been a random attack ," the officer said. / CNA
