Train in Switzerland derails/Struck by avalanches, about 80 passengers on board

A passenger train in southern Switzerland has derailed and been damaged after a large avalanche hit the tracks. The accident occurred in the mountainous area of ??the Swiss Alps in the canton of Valais.

The train derailed in the Stockgraben area, between Goppenstein and Hohtenn.

According to authorities, about 80 passengers were on the train at the time of the incident, although the official figure of people on board may change upon further verification.

Authorities and cantonal police reported that damage and injuries are possible, but exact details on their number or condition have not yet been confirmed.

Emergency teams, including ambulances, helicopters and mountain rescuers, were immediately dispatched to the scene to assist passengers and assess the damage. /CNA
