Krasniqi's defense: Prosecution makes weak claims, no evidence to link him

Jakup Krasniqi's lawyer, Aiden Ellis, has begun his defense at the next hearing in The Hague.

According to the lawyer, the prosecution's claims are very weak, as there is no evidence to link Jakup Krasniqi to the crimes.

The prosecution has not explained how it can prove the connection between the person in question and the visits to places of detention.

"Saying that he was present cannot be proof."

The claim is that he visited Lahi Brahimaj. The problem is what evidence is there that Krasniqi knew that crimes were being committed there.

Another accusation is that Krasniqi was in the Malisheva area in the period June-July '98.

I focused on these countries because they are the only ones that the Prosecution has identified in paragraph 581 of the file. If I focus on these charges, we lose the broader picture.

It was said that there were more than 50 places of detention for which charges were raised in the indictment.

There is no evidence that Jakup Krasniqi visited these locations at the specific time or had any knowledge of any crimes committed there.

The prosecution has not explained how it can prove the connection between the person in question and the visits to places of detention.

Several cases have been listed, but it cannot be claimed whether Mr. Krasniqi saw detained persons or witnessed or saw with his own eyes any mistreatment or whether he was present in the area or contributed to any crime.

"To say that he was simply present in these areas is very weak. The prosecution has no evidence to link Krasniqi to the crimes," said Jakup Krasniqi's defense lawyer./ CNA
