$100 million bribery scheme/ Former Ukrainian Energy Minister arrested

Ukraine's former Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko was arrested today by the country's National Anti-Corruption Bureau while trying to cross the border.

The arrest was made as part of the investigation called "Midas," a major corruption scandal involving Ukraine's energy sector. Investigators discovered that during his and others' rule, a vast bribery scheme was organized to profit from energy contracts and financing.

The scheme is suspected of involving more than $100 million through the distribution of contracts and a compromised tender process, causing public outrage, particularly due to problems with the country's energy supply during the Russian attacks.

Halushchenko had resigned in November 2025, when the scandal began to rock Kiev politics. Investigators believe he personally benefited from the alleged scheme. /CNA
