Marco Rubio: The US does not want a dependent and submissive Europe

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has stated that the United States does not want a "dependent" Europe or a "servant", but a partner.

"We do not want Europe to be dependent, we do not ask Europe to be a servant of the United States," he said during a joint press conference in Bratislava with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico.

The US Secretary of State insisted that it is in the United States' interest to have a strong Europe at a time when transatlantic relations are going through a period of turmoil.

On Saturday in Munich, in a speech before the Security Conference, Rubio called on Europeans to unite behind the US president's vision of world order and defend Western civilization, which he sees as threatened by mass immigration and cultural and industrial decline, while at the same time supporting a renewed connection with a "strong" Europe.

Rubio is also expected to visit Budapest, Hungary, where he will meet with Prime Minister Viktor Orban. /CNA
