US seizes oil tanker in Indian Ocean

The United States announced that American soldiers have intervened in the Indian Ocean to stop an oil tanker that was being pursued from the Caribbean, after the tanker violated a quarantine imposed by Washington on ships carrying sanctioned oil.

The tanker, named the Veronica III, with a Panamanian flag, was pursued from the Caribbean to the Indian Ocean by US forces, who stopped and boarded it as part of a maritime police operation to enforce sanctions.

Foreign media write that the ship was trying to avoid quarantine and controls, but American forces isolated and stopped it after pursuing it for great distances.

The operation was part of US efforts to stop illicit oil shipments linked to sanctioned countries, including Venezuela, which has been the subject of US sanctions for its oil exports. /CNA
