Lunar New Year / Celebrated throughout Asia

The Lunar New Year, which coincides with the first new moon of the lunar calendar, is being celebrated this year by millions of people from Beijing to Bangkok. The 15-day festival takes place every year between January 21 and February 20 and marks one of the most important cultural events in Asia.

Food plays a central role in the celebrations. In Malaysia and Singapore, the popular fresh fish salad, yusheng, is eaten only after being mixed with pumpkin by all participants. In South Korea, canned meats are popular New Year gifts.

In China, authorities have launched another year of their campaign against content deemed antisocial, including this year posts promoting the virtue of not having children.

Meanwhile, in South Korea, the trend toward simpler rituals continues. Over 60% of people have said they will not set out traditional charye tables in honor of their ancestors this year.
