Ukraine: Over 1,400 Africans from dozens of countries are fighting for Russia

Over 1,400 citizens from over 30 African countries are fighting alongside Russian forces in Ukraine, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha said on Friday.

Ukrainian officials say Russia has made efforts to bolster its military in the war against its neighbor by recruiting fighters from various countries, often through deception.

Sybiha said Russia is luring Africans into signing contracts that he described as "equivalent to ... a death sentence," and called on African governments to warn their citizens.

“Foreign nationals in the Russian army have a dark fate,” he wrote in X. “ Most of them are immediately sent to what are called ‘flesh-eating attacks,’ where they are quickly killed.”

South Africa said on Thursday it would investigate how 17 of its citizens joined mercenary forces after the men appealed for help to return home.

And Kenya said last month that some of its citizens had been detained in military camps across Russia after they unknowingly became involved in the conflict.

Sybiha said the total number of African recruits could be greater than the 1,436 identified, coming from 36 countries, and that most of the foreign mercenaries in Ukraine's hands were captured during their first military mission.

He said Ukraine would provide more detailed data on the countries and regions from which Russia has recruited troops. /REL
