Trump imposes tariffs on goods from Canada, China and Mexico

US President Donald Trump has imposed tariffs of 25% on imports from Canada and Mexico and 10% on goods from China, starting Tuesday.

He said the decision was made to address the national emergency due to fentanyl and other illegal goods entering the United States, according to the White House.

Energy imports from Canada will only have a 10 percent tax, but energy imports from Mexico will face a 25 percent tax, US officials told reporters.

Trump has declared a national emergency under the International Economic Emergencies Act in order to justify the tariff decision and have more powers to address the crisis.

White House officials have said that no one will be exempt from the tariffs.

Trump had pledged to impose tariffs during the election campaign.
