6 dead after ambulance plane crashes in Philadelphia

Six people died after an ambulance plane crashed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, about 30 seconds after taking off. The incident occurred around 6 p.m. local time on Friday.

On board the plane was a patient, her mother and four crew members. The patient had come from Mexico to be treated for a life-threatening illness and was being transported home.

All 6 people were from Mexico. The plane's final destination was the city of Tijuana in Mexico.

The President of Mexico confirmed their deaths and expressed condolences to the families.

The Learjet 55 aircraft burst into flames, damaging several homes at a busy intersection in the city. Authorities say at least six people were injured. Three of them have been released from the hospital.

The explosion occurred less than 5 kilometers from the northeast Philadelphia airport, which serves mainly business jets.

The Learjet 55 disappeared from radar shortly after taking off from the airport at 6:06 p.m. and reaching an altitude of 1,500 feet. The plane was en route to the city of Springfield, Missouri, where it was scheduled to refuel.

The crash comes two days after the country's deadliest aviation disaster in almost 25 years. An American Airlines plane carrying 60 passengers and four crew members collided in midair Wednesday night in Washington with a U.S. military helicopter with three soldiers on board.

There were no survivors from this accident./ VOA
