Trump adds $100,000 fee for skilled worker visa applicants

US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order that will add a $100,000 (£74,000) fee to applicants to the H-1B visa program for skilled foreign workers.

The proclamation mentions "abuse" of the program and will restrict access if payment is not made.

Critics have long argued that H-1Bs undermine the American workforce, while supporters — including billionaire Elon Musk — argue that it allows the U.S. to attract the best talent from around the world.

In another order, Trump created a new "gold card" to expedite visas for some immigrants in exchange for fees starting at 1 million pounds.

On Friday, Trump was joined in the Oval Office by US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.

“A hundred thousand dollars a year for H1-B visas, and all the big companies agree,” he said. “We’ve talked to them.

"If you're going to train someone, train one of the recent graduates from one of the greatest universities in our entire country. Train Americans. Stop bringing in people to take our jobs."

Since 2004, the number of H-1B visa applications has been capped at 85,000 per year.

Until now, H-1B visas have had various administrative fees totaling about $1,500./ CNA
