Estonia seeks NATO consultations after Russian jets violate airspace

Estonia has requested consultations with other NATO members after Russian fighter jets violated its airspace on Friday.

Three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets entered Estonian skies "without permission and stayed there for a total of 12 minutes" over the Gulf of Finland, the government said.

Italy, Finland and Sweden scrambled fighter jets as part of NATO's mission to bolster its eastern flank. A NATO spokesman said it was "another example of reckless Russian behavior and NATO's ability to respond."

Russia denied violating Estonian airspace. But tensions have escalated recently, after Poland and Romania - both NATO members - said Russian drones violated their airspace.

Article 4 of the NATO treaty officially launches emergency consultations within the 32-member alliance, which binds the US and many European countries together in collective defense.

It is the second time this month that a NATO member has requested consultations under Article 4. Poland did so on September 10, after Russian drones entered its airspace.

Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal said that "NATO's response to any provocation must be united and strong."

"We consider it essential to consult with our allies to ensure common awareness of the situation and to agree on our joint next steps," Michal said.

US President Donald Trump said on Friday: "I don't like it. I don't like it when that happens. It could be a big problem."
