KFOR bans flights over KEK

The NATO peacekeeping mission in Kosovo, KFOR, has stopped flights over the operational area of ??the Kosovo Energy Corporation (KEK).

This decision, which mainly concerns drones, will enter into force on September 1, KEK announced in a statement.

KEK said that according to the laws in force, its facilities and assets are categorized as part of Kosovo's critical infrastructure.

"This infrastructure represents the foundation of the electricity supply for all citizens and the country's economy, making it an essential and irreplaceable product for daily life and national development," the announcement said.

KEK said that the decision to ban flights over energy infrastructure is "evidence" that local and international institutions support the security system of Kosovo's energy infrastructure "as one of the main pillars of security and defense."

Otherwise, Kosovo's low-level airspace is managed by the Kosovo Civil Aviation Authority, while the high-level airspace - that above 6,200 meters - is under the control of Hungary, namely HungaroControl. This is because Kosovo has not yet achieved the capacity to manage high-level airspace.

Meanwhile, in accordance with United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244, but also with current laws in Kosovo, the KFOR commander has been responsible for the security of Kosovo's airspace since 1999./ REL
