Macron expects UN sanctions against Iran to be reinstated by end of month

Major European powers are likely to reimpose international sanctions against Iran by the end of the month, French President Emmanuel Macron said on Thursday.

Macron stressed that the return of sanctions is expected because the last round of talks with Tehran, aimed at preventing them, was considered frivolous.

Britain, France and Germany, the so-called E3 group, launched a 30-day process in late August to reinstate UN sanctions.

They imposed conditions on Tehran, which the latter had to meet during September, in order to delay the activation of the "automatic reimposition mechanism" of UN sanctions.

For the six-month suspension of sanctions to allow for serious talks, Iran was conditioned on allowing UN nuclear inspectors access to Tehran's nuclear facilities again - who would also demand accountability for Iran's large stockpiles of enriched uranium - as well as engaging in talks with the US.

Asked in an interview on Israel's Channel 12 whether the reimposition of sanctions was a closed issue, Macron replied: "Yes. I think so, because the latest news from Iran is not serious."

Foreign ministers of the E3 group, the European Union's foreign policy chief and their Iranian counterpart held a phone call on Wednesday, in which diplomats from both sides said there had been no substantial progress, but the door remained open to reaching a deal before the deadline.

The 15-member UN Security Council will vote on Friday on a resolution that would permanently lift UN sanctions on Iran – a step sought after the process was initiated by the E3 group.

According to diplomats, the resolution is unlikely to receive the minimum nine votes needed to pass, and even if it did, it would be vetoed by the United States, Britain or France./ REL
