Trump-Starmer conference/ Support for Ukraine, pressure on Russia to end the war

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he and US President Donald Trump had discussed during a meeting at his Chequers residence how to support Ukraine and increase pressure on Russia to end its war.

"In recent days, Putin has shown his true colors by carrying out the largest attack since the start of the invasion, killing even more innocents and committing unprecedented violations of NATO airspace. These are not the actions of someone who wants peace. So today we discussed how we can build our defenses to further support Ukraine and to decisively increase the pressure on Putin to agree a lasting peace deal," Starmer said.

It's been a month since Trump hosted Russian President Vladimir Putin for talks in Alaska, a meeting he said would lead to talks between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. But that meeting has not happened, and Russian attacks on Ukraine have intensified.

Starmer has led other European leaders in pushing Trump to do more to support Ukraine. But ahead of the trip, Trump conditioned new sanctions on Russia on NATO members halting energy purchases from Russia and imposing massive tariffs on imports of Chinese goods.

Trump expressed disappointment with Putin, saying he had expected it to be easier for him to mediate an end to the war because of his good relationship with the Russian president./CNA
