Israel says it will open a new exit route from Gaza City

The Israeli military said it would open a new temporary road on September 17 to allow residents to leave Gaza City, a day after launching a major offensive aimed at destroying Hamas - the Palestinian group designated a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union.

The Israeli military launched a massive bombardment of Gaza City on Tuesday morning and drove troops deeper into the largest urban center in the Gaza Strip.

The offensive comes after a United Nations investigation accused Israel of committing genocide in the Palestinian territories, saying Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other senior officials have instigated the crime.

Today, the Israeli army said it is opening a temporary transportation route via Salah al-Din Road.

Israeli army spokesman Colonel Avichay Adraee said the corridor would remain open for only 48 hours starting at midnight on Thursday, local time.

Until now, the military had called on residents to leave Gaza City via the coastal road to what it describes as a humanitarian zone further south, including parts of Al-Mawas.

The Salah al-Din Road runs through the Gaza Strip from north to south.

In August, the UN estimated that close to 1 million people live in Gaza City and the surrounding area.

Israel said the ground offensive launched on Tuesday aims to drive Hamas from one of its last strongholds in the Gaza Strip.

The Gaza war began after Hamas attacked southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing nearly 1,200 people and kidnapping 251 others.

Israel's retaliatory offensive has killed more than 64,000 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Health Ministry - figures considered reliable by the UN./ REL
