Meeting in Copenhagen/ EU finance ministers discuss frozen Russian assets

European Union economic and financial affairs ministers are meeting in Copenhagen today, where they are discussing a proposal to use frozen Russian assets to help finance the Ukrainian government.

Ahead of the meeting, German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil stated that the German government was awaiting a proposal from the European Commission.

"Everything needs to be carefully considered and we are now very specifically waiting for proposals from the European Commission, but Germany will take on a role in which we want to make things possible and not a role in which we block things," were Klingbeil's words, according to Reuters.

Meanwhile, Spain's Economy Minister, Carlos Cuerpo, had stated that the Spanish government supports the Commission's efforts to monetize frozen Russian assets in the EU to finance Kiev and its defense against Russia.

"From Spain, we have advocated for the greatest possible increase in funding for Ukraine," Cuerpo was quoted as saying in an interview with Bloomberg TV.

He also said that Spain, one of the main importers of Russian liquefied natural gas to the EU, is working to reduce these imports and diversify its supply from countries such as the US./ CNA
