Trump: US forces strike third suspected drug ship, killing three people

President Donald Trump has announced that US forces have struck another drug trafficking ship off the coast of Venezuela, killing three drug traffickers.

Trump said he ordered the attack on the ship, which was in the U.S. Southern Command area of ??responsibility, after U.S. intelligence confirmed it was trafficking drugs. It was the third such attack on suspected drug ships in recent weeks.

Trump's statement on Truth Social on Friday said the attack took place in international waters. The U.S. Southern Command's area of ??responsibility covers most of South America and the Caribbean.

So far, 14 people have been killed in two attacks on drug ships passing through Venezuela.

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has previously condemned the attacks and said his country will defend itself against US "aggression".

Trump's tweet on Friday evening echoed previous reports of such attacks. He featured a video showing the ship traveling across a body of water and then seconds later the ship explodes and bursts into flames.

"On my orders, the Secretary of War ordered a lethal kinetic attack on a vessel affiliated with a Designated Terrorist Organization that was conducting narcotics trafficking in the USSOUTHCOM area of ??responsibility," Trump said.

"Intelligence confirmed that the ship was trafficking illegal narcotics and was moving along a known sea route, traversed by drug trafficking groups to poison Americans," he wrote.

"No American Forces were harmed in this attack. Stop the sale of fentanyl, narcotics, and illegal drugs in America and the commission of violence and terrorism against Americans."/ CNA
