Former President Donald Trump won the Republican primary in New Hampshire on Tuesday, further strengthening his chances of winning the Republican Party's nomination for November's presidential election.

The result marks a step back for former US ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, who invested considerable time and financial resources in defeating Mr Trump.

Ms Haley was the latest challenger in the Republican race after Florida Governor Ron DeSantis ended his presidential campaign over the weekend, allowing her to campaign as the only alternative to Mr Trump.

Candidate Haley stepped up criticism of the former president, questioning his mental acuity and presenting herself as a unifying candidate who would bring about change for generations to come. But her campaign did not attract enough voters.

Mr. Trump can boast being the first Republican presidential candidate to win open races in Iowa and New Hampshire since the two states began leading the election calendar in 1976. If Mr. Trump wins the Republican Party nomination, it would be the third time that he's running for the White House.

Easy victories in both states show Mr. Trump's ability to unite the various Republican currents around him. He won the support of evangelical conservatives who hold sway with more moderate voters in the states of Iowa and New Hampshire, which he hopes to replicate as the primaries expand to other US states.

Mrs. Haley was unable to take advantage of New Hampshire's more moderate political tradition. Her bid to become the Republican standard bearer is fading fast. She will participate in the Republican primary in South Carolina on February 24.

The former governor of this state is hoping that a resounding victory in South Carolina would give her campaign momentum heading into the March 5 Super Tuesday primary.

But in a deeply conservative state, where Mr. Trump enjoys great popularity, it may be difficult to realize Mrs. Haley's ambitions, and a loss in her state could have political consequences for her./ VOA
