Israeli army: 21 of its soldiers were killed by an attack in Gaza

The Israeli military said on Tuesday that 21 of its soldiers had been killed in the Gaza Strip, calling it the deadliest attack on its forces in the three-year war against Hamas.

Hamas, the Palestinian group that rules Gaza, has been declared a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union.

Reservists were preparing explosive devices to destroy two buildings in central Gaza on Monday when a militant fired a grenade at a nearby tank, Israeli army spokesman Daniel Hagari said.

The explosion activated the explosive devices, resulting in the collapse of the buildings while the soldiers were inside.

The high death toll could mark new momentum in calls for Israel to pause or even end the offensive.

The high death toll on the side of the army has increased the pressure on the Israeli Government to end the fighting.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to press ahead with the offensive until Israel destroys Hamas and the 100 hostages being held in Gaza are freed.

But the Israelis are divided on whether these two goals can be realized.

The families of the hostages and many of their supporters have called on Israel to reach a ceasefire deal as time is running out.

On Monday, dozens of family members of the hostages entered the Israeli Parliament building, demanding an agreement to enable the release of their loved ones.

Israel declared war on Hamas on October 7, 2023, shortly after the group carried out deadly attacks on its soil, killing around 1,200 people and taking over 240 hostages.

As a result of Israel's military offensive in Gaza, over 25,000 Palestinians have been killed, according to Palestinian health authorities.

The United Nations and international aid agencies estimate that the fighting has caused a humanitarian disaster in Gaza, as a quarter of this territory, with 2.3 million inhabitants, are facing starvation./ REL
