25 killed in attack in Donetsk, pro-Russian officials blame Ukraine

25 people were killed and 20 wounded after Ukrainian forces shelled the Russian-controlled city of Donetsk in eastern Ukraine, Denis Pushilin, the Russian-appointed head of the Donetsk region, said on Sunday.

According to the Russian-appointed mayor of Donetsk, Alexei Kulemzin, Ukrainian forces bombed a busy area with shops and a goods market.

The head of the region said that the city had been hit by Ukrainian artillery. Ukraine has not commented on the incident.

Pictures and videos taken by Reuters at the scene showed people crying, some who said they had lost relatives, and bodies lying in the blood-soaked snow near one of the city's markets.

Pushilin said emergency services were working at the scene and forensics specialists were trying to collect fragments of the weapon used in the attack.

Donetsk is one of four Ukrainian regions that Russia annexed last year, a move deemed illegal by most countries in the United Nations General Assembly. Russia does not fully control any of the four regions./ VOA
