Over 42,000 Russian soldiers have been killed in the war in Ukraine

At least 42,284 members of the Russian army have been killed since the start of Russia's war in Ukraine in February 2022, according to research by journalists from Mediazona and the British broadcaster BBC, who have verified the identities of the soldiers killed.

This figure includes 5,089 mobilized soldiers and 7,810 prisoners, recruited from Russian prisons, these two media organizations said.

Journalists have said that of the total number of dead, 3,053 were officers and 349 had the rank of lieutenant colonel or higher.

Journalists have based their research on data from open sources, including death notices in the media, or messages published on social networks by the family members of the victims.

The Russian Ministry of Defense has not updated the data on the dead in the war and has not commented on the data published by journalists.

Earlier this month, the Russian site Important Stories found that since the start of 2022, the Pension Fund of the Russian Federation has prohibited employees of its branches from publishing data on people involved in the war against Ukraine, after such data can be calculated to register dead Russian soldiers.

In April of last year, the same platform said that the Russian Ministry of Defense is not publishing information about ex-soldiers who are left with special needs, nor about widows or orphans who had family members in the war, for reasons the same. /REL
