Tens of thousands of people took to the streets of Frankfurt on Saturday to protest against the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.

The police said that about 35,000 people participated in the protest, under the slogan "Protect Democracy".

The protest was held in the center of Frankfurt, which is known as the financial capital of Germany.

A police spokesman described the atmosphere as peaceful.

Protests like this one on Saturday have been held in several other cities, and they enjoy the support of the state chancellor, Olaf Scholz. On Saturday, it was reported about a similar protest in Limburg, and that the number was greater than expected - 2,800.

The protests were sparked by a report by the platform Correctiv, which revealed that AfD politicians had held a meeting with far-right extremists in Potsdam.

Members of the conservative Democratic Union party, the largest opposition party, also participated in the meeting.

At the meeting in Potsdam, right-wing extremists discussed topics such as "re-immigration", a term used by far-right circles as a euphemism for the deportation of migrants and minorities.

In a presentation made on Friday, Scholz considered re-immigration as "an attack on our democracy".

He has welcomed the protests planned for the weekend.

"I say it very clearly, right wing extremists are attacking our democracy", he said.

Tens of thousands of people are expected to participate in similar protests that will be held in German cities./ Rel
