The UN interrogates Russia over the fate of Ukrainian children

The United Nations will demand Monday from Moscow to clarify what has happened to thousands of Ukrainian children believed to have been forcibly sent to Russia since the start of the war in Ukraine.

The United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child - 18 independent experts - is expected to assess Russia's evidence over two days.

Their long list of concerns has been sent to Moscow in the first half of 2023.

They want to know how many children have been "evacuated" to Russia, or within the Ukrainian territory occupied by Russia.

Experts have said they want to know what Moscow has done to protect "the right of these children to maintain their identity, including nationality, name and family relationships".

Kiev estimates that 20,000 Ukrainian children have been forcibly sent to Russia.

Moscow has said it wants to protect these children from the fighting.

So far, only about 400 children have been repatriated.

Russia had said in several written responses in October that the places for the evacuated children are assigned and the moves are made with their approval.

Russian authorities have not indicated the total number of children taken from Ukraine, but have mentioned that they include orphaned children and children without parental care.

The war in Ukraine started on February 24, 2022.

Russian President Vladimir Putin calls the war a "special military operation" to demilitarize Ukraine.

The West has responded to Russia, hitting the economy of this country with harsh sanctions.

As a result of the war, thousands of people have died and millions more have been displaced from their homes./ REL
