The Polish president criticizes the EU executive for blocking funds

Polish President Andrzej Duda has criticized the European Commission for blocking European Union funds for his country, considering this as an "attempt to force Poland to change" its government.

He has said that he is open to negotiating changes in the justice system.

The previous Polish government, led by the nationalist Law and Justice party, has been embroiled in a dispute with the EU over Warsaw's rule of law reforms, resulting in the blocking of billions of euros in European bloc funding.

The new pro-EU government has pledged to restore access to these funds, improving the rule of law, although it is facing resistance from supporters and allies of the previous government, including Duda and some senior judges.

"I have no doubt what was the reason for blocking the money by the European Commission. It was a pure political action against the past Polish authorities," said Duda at a press conference in Vilnius.

"An attempt to force Poland to change the authorities, that's how I understand it, and that's how it should be understood, and the latest moves only confirm that," he added.

However, Duda has said that he is open to negotiations and proposals for eventual changes in the Polish justice system, but he will not allow new verification of judges who have been appointed during his term.

The elections of October 15 last year ended the eight-year rule of the Law and Justice party, and then a new government was formed, led by the former president of the European Council, Donald Tusk./ REL
