Germany: Global action against drug smuggling
Cocaine seized

Global cooperation must be strengthened to fight drug trafficking, stated on Monday (22.01.2024) the Minister of the Interior of Germany, Nancy Faeser.

"The ports of the Netherlands, Belgium and France are increasingly being used for international drug smuggling," Faeser told media group Funke Media.

Drug trafficking has also penetrated using Germany's main port of Hamburg, she said. Faeser further said that the drug cartels are responsible "for an unimaginable spiral of violence" that is also directed at journalists and prosecutors, who are threatened with murder, and that torture chambers have been created in Europe.

"So I want tougher and more international action against the cocaine and drug trade," Faeser said.

Cooperation with South America

Faeser further noted that he will travel to South America, "so that our police forces can cooperate directly and so that we can ensure that these quantities of drugs do not reach Europe."

"Brazil is especially a key partner for us in the fight against drug smuggling. I would also prefer cooperation with Peru and Colombia," said Faeser.

The Minister of the Interior mentioned a series of preventive measures aimed at progressing the fight against this smuggling. These measures include identifying companies involved in drug trafficking and companies used by the cartels, and for the police to inform serious cruise lines of cartels' attempts to smuggle through them.

Faeser also said: "we want to be aware when pressure is put on port workers."

Workers must have points of contact that they can turn to when pressured by smugglers, and workers must also be paid correctly so that they are not lured by cartels' money, said the German Minister of the Interior./ DW
