WHO reports an increase in measles cases in Europe

Europe recorded 30,000 measles cases last year, or 30 times more cases than in 2022, the World Health Organization (WHO) said, calling for an "urgent" vaccination campaign.

"We have not only a 30-fold increase in measles cases in the region, but almost 21,000 hospitalizations and five measles-related deaths. This is worrying," said the WHO.

The WHO Europe region covers 53 countries, including Russia and Central Asia. Forty states have reported measles cases in 2023, the organization said.

Russia and Kazakhstan have recorded the most cases, with 10,000 cases each. Western Europe, Britain has also recorded 183 cases.

Vaccination rates against the disease have declined during the COVID-19 pandemic, and "urgent vaccination efforts are needed to stop transmission and prevent further spread."

Around 1.8 million babies in the WHO Europe region were not vaccinated between 2020 and 2022.

"It is important that all countries rapidly detect cases and respond quickly to measles outbreaks, which could jeopardize the progress made towards measles elimination," WHO said.

The level of vaccination against measles has also decreased globally./ Rel
