Riot in India, 54 dead and 23 thousand displaced

At least 54 people have been killed and around 23,000 others have been displaced in India's northeastern state of Manipur after riots swept through the Indian state. Meanwhile, around 260 people have been hospitalized.

On Sunday, the army said it had "significantly increased" its surveillance in violence-hit areas, including the Imphal Valley, through aerial assets such as drones and the deployment of military helicopters.

Riots erupted on Wednesday after a protest organized by the Kuki tribal group clashed with the non-tribal Metei group. This has caused damage to vehicles and property.

Authorities on Thursday issued strike orders and called for military reinforcements to quell the violence that opened a new fault line in the state with a checkered history of ethnic violence. Internet connection was cut soon after the riots started and a curfew was imposed in 9 out of 16 districts.
