Syria is readmitted to the Arab League

The Arab League's foreign ministers, who met on Sunday in Cairo, agreed to readmit Syria 10 years after the decision to suspend the country's membership because of the civil war.

The decision to readmit Syria did not have unanimous support, but was received by a majority vote of Arab League members during a non-public debate.

The move comes just days before a high-level Arab League meeting in Riyadh.

Arab League spokesman Jamal Rushdy said Sunday that the decision was a symbolic political move, as for years Syria was not allowed to participate in the Arab community and Arab countries want Syria to be involved in resolving its conflict.

In a statement of the Arab League, it is noted that "the resolution of the conflict in Syria is a matter that requires successive steps. The first step was giving Syria the right to participate in the meetings of the Arab League" . It is also emphasized that "the community supports the territorial integrity of Syria and the withdrawal of all foreign forces from the country".

Khattar Abou Diab, who teaches political science at the University of Paris, said Syria's readmission comes at an inauspicious time, just days after Iranian President Ebrahim Raissi's visit to Damascus in which Tehran and Damascus reached long-term agreements on oil, transport, energy and other economic sectors.

According to him, the decision marks a complete victory for the Syrian regime. He notes that the international community has allowed Syria to return to the United Nations, so as long as Damascus can be a member of the UN, there is no reason why it should not be a member of the Arab League.

The ministers also agreed to support the initiative of the United States and Saudi Arabia to resolve the conflict in Sudan./ VOA
