Azerbaijan and Armenia made significant progress in addressing difficult issues during "intensive and constructive" talks hosted by the US this week, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said.

Blinken said that after bilateral and tripartite discussions over the past four days, both sides "demonstrated a sincere commitment to normalizing relations and ending the long-standing conflict between them."

The two sides agreed in principle on some terms and have a greater understanding of each other's positions on outstanding issues, Blinken said.

Baku and Yerevan will continue to have the full support and commitment of the United States in their efforts to ensure lasting peace, he added.

Armenia and Azerbaijan have fought two wars over Nagorno-Karabakh - in 1990 and 2020 - and have constantly clashed over control of the territory.

Tensions have risen again last month, when Azerbaijan set up a checkpoint at the start of the Lakin Corridor - the only road linking Armenia with the disputed territory of Nagorno Karabakh.

Armenia has said the checkpoint, set up on April 23, is a violation of a Moscow-brokered ceasefire that ended six weeks of fighting in 2020.

Azerbaijan has said it set up the checkpoint to prevent arms supplies to Nagorno-Karabakh from Armenia.

Yerevan has denied this accusation./ Rel
