The three journalists imprisoned in Iran win the UN's highest award

The United Nations announced that the highest press freedom award was given to three female journalists imprisoned in Iran, "for their commitment to truth and accountability."

The first winner is journalist Niloufar Hamedi, who broke the news about the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini last September, while she was stopped by the morality police for not wearing the headscarf properly. The second winner is journalist Elaheh Mohammadi, who wrote about Mrs. Amini's funeral.

Ms. Amini's death sparked months of protests in dozens of cities across Iran. The demonstrations created one of the most serious challenges to the Islamic Republic of Iran since the 2009 Green Movement that brought millions of protesters to the streets.

The third winner is Narges Mohammadi, who worked for many years as a journalist and is among Iran's best-known activists.

The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Press Freedom Award is named after Guillermo Canos, a Colombian journalist who was assassinated outside his newspaper's offices in Bogotá in 1986.

In late April, Iran's judiciary admitted that the two journalists who broke the news of Ms Amini's death, Niloufar Hamedi and Elaheh Mohammadi, had been charged with collaboration with the United States, activities against national security and creating "propaganda against the system".

While around 100 journalists were arrested during the demonstrations, the reporting of journalists Hamedi and Mohammadi was crucial in the days after Ms Amini's death in spreading the word about the outrage that followed. Mrs. Hamedi worked for the reformist newspaper "Shargh", while Mrs. Mohammadi worked for the reformist newspaper "Ham-Mihan".

Their arrests have sparked international criticism of the months-long crackdown by security forces that followed Ms Amini's death. According to UNESCO, the journalists Hamedi and Mohammadi have been in Iran's Evin prison since September, and Mrs. Hamedi is kept in solitary confinement./VOA
