The meteorological agency of the United Nations Organization has warned of the increased likelihood of the development of the weather phenomenon, El Niño, in the coming months, prompting higher global temperatures and possibly even new heat records.

The World Meteorological Organization has said on Wednesday that it now estimates that the probability of the development of El Niño before the end of July stands at 60 percent, while before the end of September at 80 percent, reports AFP.

"This will change weather and climate trends around the world," said Wilfran Moufouma Okia, head of the OBM's climate forecasting service.

El Niño, a naturally occurring phenomenon that is usually associated with increased heat around the world, but also with drought in some parts of the world and torrential rains in other areas, last occurred in 2018-19.

Since 2020, the world has been hit by the cold opposite of El Niño, an unusually long La Ninja that ended earlier this year, making way for the current neutral conditions.

However, the UN has said the past eight years have been the warmest on record, despite the cooling effect of La Ninja for half the period.

Without that weather phenomenon, the heating situation could have been even worse.

La Ninja "has acted as a temporary brake on the global increase in temperatures", said the head of OBM, Petteri Taalas.

Now, "the world must prepare for the development of El Niño", he warned.

At this stage, there are no indications of the strength or duration of the upcoming El Niño./ Rel
