Guterres: The UN will stay in Afghanistan, but funds are running out

The United Nations will remain in Afghanistan to provide aid to millions of desperate Afghans, but funds are running out, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Tuesday.

Guterres spoke after a meeting of representatives of more than 20 countries in Doha, Qatar to discuss a common international approach to Afghanistan.

He said that concerns about the country's stability are growing.

"We remain (in Afghanistan) and are determined to seek the necessary conditions to continue... participants agreed on the need for an engagement strategy," Guterres said.

"The order of the Taliban that has banned Afghan women from working at the UN was a violation of human rights. We will never remain silent in the face of unprecedented systematic attacks on the rights of women and girls," he said .

Guterres stressed that the meeting was not aimed at recognizing the Taliban administration - something neither country has yet formally done.

He said he was open to meeting Taliban officials when the time was right to do so, but according to him "today is not the right time".

The Taliban administration says it respects the rights of women in accordance with their interpretation of Islamic law and that the territory of Afghanistan will not be used for militancy or violence against other nations./ REL
