UN: Over 800,000 people may flee Sudan
War in Sudan

The United Nations warned that more than 800,000 people could flee Sudan as rival military factions battle for power.

Hundreds of people have been killed and thousands injured since fighting broke out on April 15 between the army and a paramilitary group known as the Rapid Support Force.

Both sides agreed on Sunday to extend the ceasefire for 72 hours, despite reports of continued violations.

The UN's deputy head of refugee affairs, Raouf Mazou, said his agency expects an exodus of 815,000 people, including 580,000 Sudanese, as well as foreign refugees now living in the country.

According to him, about 73,000 people have already left Sudan.

Sudan's Ministry of Health has said that at least 528 people have been killed in the fighting and 4,599 have been injured.

The United Nations has reported a similar death toll, but has said it believes the real number is much higher.

Who fights?

On one side of the conflict is General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, president of Sudan's military government and head of the army, while his opponent is General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, Sudan's vice president, who oversees the Rapid Support Force.

Both of them accuse each other of firing the first shots in the fight.

The tensions between them are related to the transfer of power to a civilian authority and the integration of the Rapid Support Forces into the army./ Rel
