Armenia and Azerbaijan will hold a new round of talks in Washington on Sunday in an effort to normalize relations, Armenia's Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said Saturday.

Tensions have risen again between the two countries over the Nagorno-Karabakh region that both countries claim belongs to them.

Russian peacekeepers were deployed there in 2020 to end a war, the second Armenia and Azerbaijan have fought over the enclave since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991.

The mountainous region is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan, but is populated mainly by ethnic Armenians.

"From April 30, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia, Ararat Mirzoyan, will be in Washington on a working visit. The next round of discussions on the agreement on the normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan is planned," spokeswoman Ani Badalyan said on the website of her official Facebook page.

There was no immediate confirmation of the meeting from Azerbaijan.

Despite efforts to mediate between them, Armenia and Azerbaijan have yet to reach a peace agreement that would resolve outstanding issues such as demarcation of borders and the return of prisoners.

Azerbaijan set up a new checkpoint last Sunday on the road to Karabakh, the Lachin Corridor, in a move Armenia called a serious violation of the 2020 ceasefire./ REL
