Putin decrees a law that provides life imprisonment for treason charges
Russian President Vladimir Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree Friday increasing the maximum penalty for treason to life in prison. This is the latest measure taken by the Kremlin since the start of the war in Ukraine, as part of an effort to suppress dissent in the country.

The decree was posted on the Kremlin website. The law had previously received approval from lawmakers, who had voted to increase the maximum sentence on treason charges to life in prison from the 20 years previously provided for in the law. Lawmakers also approved raising the maximum sentence for committing "a terrorist act," defined as a life-threatening crime aimed at destabilizing Russia, from 15 to 20 years.

Those found guilty of sabotage can be sentenced to 20 years in prison, up from 15 under the law, while those convicted of "international terrorism" risk life in prison, up from 12 years currently. The decree does not explain what "international terrorism" is.

Mr Putin signed the decree at a time when rights groups say the authorities are stepping up efforts to silence the few remaining opposition voices in the country.

Russia says such laws are necessary to protect the country from interference by elements supported by Ukraine and Western intelligence agencies./ VOA
