Russia's Foreign Ministry said on Thursday, April 27, that it has rejected a request from the United States to visit The Wall Street Journal's American journalist Evan Gershkovich, who is imprisoned in Russia under accusations of espionage.
The Russian ministry said it rejected a request for a visit on May 11 in retaliation for the U.S. refusal to grant visas to Russian journalists who planned to accompany Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on a trip to the United Nations ( UN).
Gershkovich has been in custody since his March 29 arrest by Russian security services on espionage charges that he, The Wall Street Journal and the US government have denied.
Gershkovich is the first American correspondent since the end of the Cold War to be arrested in Russia on espionage charges. His arrest shocked American journalists and sparked outrage among Western nations.
The United States of America has declared Gershkovich "wrongfully arrested" and demanded his immediate release.
Russia's rejection of the US request for a consular visit to Gershkovich came after Lavrov warned that Moscow "will not forget and will not forgive" the denial of visas to Russian journalists.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said it was also considering taking other retaliatory steps.
"A sign of protest was filed regarding the provocative behavior of the US diplomatic mission, which prevented the issuance of visas to media representatives selected by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who were supposed to accompany him on his trip to New York as part of the Russian presidency of the UN Security Council," said a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry.
"The US Embassy was informed in this regard that its request for consular access to American citizen Gershkovich, arrested on suspicion of espionage on May 11, was denied," the ministry's statement said.
"Other possible retaliatory measures, for which the American side will be notified in time, are being considered"./ Rel
