Pope Francis will allow women to vote for the first time in the bishops' meeting in October, which happens for the first time in history.

The new rules announced on Wednesday will give the five religious sisters the right to vote in the synod, which is a papal advisory body.

In the past, women were only allowed to participate in the rally as observers.

However, the reforms are seen as a significant change for the Roman Catholic Church, which has been dominated by men for centuries.

Pope Francis announced that voting rights will be extended to 70 non-clerical members of the religious community, moving the synod away from being a meeting of the Church's hierarchy only.

The pope, who has defended the reform, has said he hopes half of them will be women and has also emphasized the inclusion of young people.

"It's an important change, it's not a revolution," said Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich, a key organizer of the synod.

Christopher Lamb, Vatican correspondent for Catholic news publication The Tablet, told the BBC World Service's Newshour program that the changes were "very significant" and an attempt by the Pope to make decisions about the future of the Church more inclusively.

He added that the reforms related to women reflected an "unprecedented" dialogue on the issue of women's representation that had been taking place for some time. /CNA.al
