USA: 20 thousand Russians killed in Ukraine since December

The White House said Monday that it now estimates that since December alone, Russia has suffered 100,000 casualties, including more than 20,000 killed, as Ukraine has withstood heavy attacks by Russian forces in eastern Ukraine.

White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said the United States' assessment is based on newly released data from US intelligence services. He did not provide details on how US intelligence agencies reached this conclusion.

The US chief of staff, General Mark Milley, said in November that Russia had suffered more than 100,000 killed or wounded in the first eight months of the war. The new figures suggest that Russian losses have increased dramatically in recent months.

Troops from the Russian mercenary group Wagner and other Russian forces are fighting Ukrainian troops house-to-house for control of what has become known as the "road of life," the last remaining road to the west still in Ukrainian hands, which making it critical for supplies and the arrival of new Russian troops in eastern Ukraine. Both sides have cited their victories in recent days.

Mr Kirby said nearly half of those killed since December had been members of the Wagner group, many of them convicts released from prison to join Russia's war in Ukraine. He said the Wagner group's forces "were sent into combat without sufficient training, without combat leadership or organizational logic of command and control."

Mr. Kirby declined to comment on the death toll among Ukrainian forces. General Milley said in November that about 100,000 Ukrainians had been killed in fighting with Russian forces in the first eight months of the war./ Voa
