Protests in Brussels/ Romanians demand entry into Schengen

Hundreds of Romanians took part in the protest organized in Brussels by the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) party to stop the treatment of Romanians as second-class European citizens.

In addition, the protesters also demanded the immediate entry of Romania into the Schengen Area.

"Romania can no longer tolerate being treated as a second-rate state in Europe; we are tired of the decisions of the European bureaucracy that do not take into account the interests of Romanians", said one of the protesters in this regard.

Romania has been trying to become part of the border-free Schengen zone since 2007, but its finalization has been delayed by claims that Romania still needs to work to better manage the situation at its borders.

In December last year, Romania's membership of the Schengen Area was blocked by Austria following the latter's authorities' concerns about illegal migrants.

Remaining outside the Schengen area brings obvious damage to road transporters, among others. The General Secretary of the National Union of Road Transporters from Romania (UNTRR), Radu Dinescu, said that the total cost recorded by road transporters increased to 2.41 billion euros, thus accounting for a penalty of almost 30 percent of lost time.

Last month, over 100 youth organizations from Europe demanded the admission of Romania as well as Bulgaria to the Schengen Area.

According to the representatives of the organizations, the absence of these two Balkan states in Schengen has some negative consequences manifested in several layers in the lives of young people.

However, Austria's position will remain unchanged when it comes to the admission of both Balkan countries to Schengen. Recently, Austria's foreign minister, Alexander Schallenberg, said that the country will maintain its veto against further expansion of the EU's Schengen area until a steady decline in asylum seekers is observed./ Adapted from CNA.al
