The World Food Program suspends aid to the Palestinians

The World Food Program - a United Nations agency - will suspend food aid to over 200,000 Palestinians starting next month due to major budget cuts, an official of the group has said for the Palestinian territories.

"Due to major budget cuts, the Program has been forced to make difficult decisions to concentrate resources," said Samer Abdeljaber, director of the organization for the Palestinian territories.

Families in Gaza will be most affected, where food insecurity and poverty are at their highest.

This agency has offered the Palestinians a monthly aid of 10 euros, as well as other food.

With budget cuts, both programs will be affected.

Gaza, which has been ruled by the Islamist group Hamas since 2007, is home to 2.3 million people.

Of these, 45 percent are unemployed, and 80 percent depend on international aid, the UN said.

Citing security concerns, Israel has imposed a blockade on Palestinians, making it difficult for people and goods to move.

The UN agency has said it will continue to distribute aid to 140,000 people in Gaza and the West Bank, but if there is no further funding in the future, it may suspend all aid in August.

The Palestinians have protested against this decision, with the cries of "No to poverty"./ REL
