Another surprise at the Louvre Museum/ Around 400 books damaged by a breakdown

Hundreds of books at the Library of Egyptian Antiquities in Paris were damaged after a water leak occurred at the Louvre Museum.

According to the deputy director of the Louvre, Francis Steinbock, the affected books are between 300 and 400.

These are mainly hardcover journals of Egyptology and scientific documentation, used by scholars and dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The books will be dried, sent to a bookbinder, and then returned to the shelves. As the administration stated, these are extremely useful documents for the investigation, but not unique.

The leak was discovered in the hydraulic system that supplies the heating and ventilation equipment of the library, which is located in the Mollien wing.

According to the same sources, the incident was caused by the accidental opening of a valve, resulting in water leaking from a pipe into the ceiling of one of the rooms.

The specific plumbing system is characterized by the museum administration as "completely outdated," has been out of service for months, and is scheduled to be replaced by September 2026, as part of extensive renovation projects.

An internal investigation has already been ordered to clarify the exact causes of the incident. /CNA
