German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has defended his behavior towards US President Donald Trump during his visit to the White House in Washington this week, following accusations of "excessive respect" for the American leader.
"When the cameras are rolling, I will not start debating with the US president ," Merz said at a campaign rally in the town of Stockach during a campaign event ahead of Sunday's state election in Baden-Württemberg.
Merz explained that he continued to focus on shared values ??in his relations with the US, given the fact that "Europe remains dependent on the Americans at the moment when it comes to defense."
