Iran attacks Maltese-flagged tanker in Persian Gulf near Strait of Hormuz

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has claimed to have attacked an oil tanker in the Persian Gulf near the Strait of Hormuz.

According to the Iranian news agency Tasnim, the ship called "Prima" was hit by a drone after, according to the IRGC, it had ignored repeated warnings from the force's navy.

The statement said the tanker had failed to comply with orders to stop traffic in the area, while the Strait of Hormuz is considered a high-risk area for navigation at this time. The attack, according to reports, occurred in the early hours of the morning.

Data from the maritime monitoring site MarineTraffic shows that the "Prima" is a tanker transporting oil and chemicals and sailing under the flag of Malta.

So far there is no confirmed information about major damage or casualties, while the incident is expected to increase tensions on one of the most important oil transportation routes in the world. / CNA
