52 French ships blocked in the Persian Gulf and 8 in the Red Sea, Paris seeks

Some 52 French ships are currently stranded in the Persian Gulf, while 8 others flying the French flag or belonging to French companies are stranded in the Red Sea, French Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot announced on Friday.

The minister said the blockade comes at a time when tensions in the Middle East are high, affecting maritime traffic along major international trade routes. He also confirmed that French authorities are in constant contact with the crews of the ships, and that some of them have French sailors on board.

In a statement to French media outlet CNews/Europe 1, Tabarot said France is trying to build an international coalition of countries to ensure freedom of navigation and protect maritime traffic in the affected areas. The effort comes amid concerns about the safety of commercial ships and the economic consequences of a prolonged blockade in one of the world's most important maritime corridors.

The incident reflects the escalation of tensions in the Middle East, where the Strait of Hormuz and the surrounding area have seen effective closures of maritime traffic due to operations and threats related to the regional conflict.
