"Let the people speak"/ Osmani calls for constitutional changes for

Kosovo's President, Vjosa Osmani, has announced that she has submitted to the Assembly constitutional amendments to enable the election of the country's president through popular vote.

In her response, Osmani called on all political parties to vote for her initiative. She added that from now on, the people must decide.

Given the successive failures in electing the President, I have just submitted to the Assembly the constitutional amendments for direct elections of the President, which were drafted by the Constitutional Amendment Commission in 2011.

I invite all political parties to vote for these constitutional amendments.

From now on, let the people speak!

Osman's reaction comes after political parties failed to reach an agreement on a consensual president and she did not receive their support for a second term as the country's president.

The Speaker of the Assembly of Kosovo, Albulena Haxhiu, announced in a post that she has supported the request of President Vjosa Osmani. Haxhiu said that she has accepted the constitutional amendments from Osmani, which foresee that the president be elected directly by the people.

"In this way, the bottlenecks that are hindering the functioning of institutions and that are making their stability impossible are eliminated. I join the President's call for voting on these amendments ," Haxhiu wrote.  /CNA
