Iran's secret weapon that became its 'Achilles heel'

Iran's network of underground missile bases, often called "missile cities," was intended as one of the country's most powerful strategic weapons. But during the recent conflict, with attacks by the US and Israel, this system is becoming an "Achilles heel."

What are "rocket cities"?

Iran has built large underground bases where ballistic missiles are stored and launched. These structures are designed to protect the missiles from bombing and to hide them from satellites.

Since the conflict began, Iran has launched more than 500 missiles at Israel, US bases and targets in the Persian Gulf region. However, many of them have been intercepted and Iran's capacity to continue attacks appears to be diminishing.

What analysts say:

Analysts say the main problem is that the locations of most of the bases are already known by the US and Israel.

Planes and drones constantly patrol the areas where these bases are located. They strike as soon as the entrances open or the missile launchers appear. According to experts, the concept of underground bases has a drawback, in that systems that were once mobile and difficult to detect, when embedded in fixed structures become easier to identify and destroy.

Satellites have recorded damage to missile bases, both in Kermanshah and Tabriz.

According to the US Middle East Command, Iranian missile launches have dropped by about 86% in four days./ CNA
